Aoussou Carnival
Every late July, floats, troupes and musicians parade along the seafront to celebrate the sea. A tradition said to go back to the Roman Neptunalia.
The festival of the sea
Aoussou takes its name from the month of August in the Berber calendar and is said to continue the Neptune festivals of ancient Hadrumetum. Today it is Sousse’s great carnival: decorated floats, folk groups from across Tunisia and abroad, brass bands and dancers, all along the seafront boulevard.
Practical
The parade takes place in the late afternoon. Arrive early for a spot along the boulevard; café terraces fill up from 4pm. Exact dates are announced each June.
